With the presentation of its new annual report at the end of August, the Documentation Centre Political Islam (DPI) attracted considerable media interest nationwide. Shortly afterwards, DPI Director Lisa Fellhofer also spoke about the most important current developments in the field of religiously motivated extremism in the podcast ‘sicherheitsbewusst – Reden wir über Sicherheit’.
In conversation with communications consultant Thomas Goiser, who specialises in security issues, Fellhofer discussed, among other things, the acceleration of radicalisation among young people, including an increasing number of young women, by extremist preachers. In addition, she noted that there has been a recent increase in the prevalence of so-called ‘lifestyle Islamism.’ Through the skilful use of modern technologies and, above all, popular cultural trends and codes, Islamist ideologies are now being spread in a more subtle way than before. In contrast, anti-Semitic narratives in the field of Islamism are now being circulated in a much more blunt manner, as Director Fellhofer explains.
In this context, since the events of 7 October 2023, it has become apparent that extremist groups are increasingly succeeding in overcoming ideological differences. In many cases, the ‘West’ as a common enemy seems to be taking on the role of an element that both creates identity and unites.
