DPI Focus on developments in Syria

New brief analysis sheds light on regional players and global consequences.

The war in Syria, which has been ongoing since 2011, intensified again at the end of November 2024 as a result of an attack by Islamist insurgents from the Idlib region. In light of the current situation, the Documentation Centre for Political Islam (DPI) has published a Focus report entitled ‘Syria at a crossroads: Local conflict with global implications’. The publication briefly describes the current players and their networks, possible effects on Austria, Europe and various global conflicts. The lines of conflict extend beyond the Assad regime and the Islamist and other opposition groups in Syria. The involvement of Turkey, the Kurdish population group and the Lebanese Hezbollah with its allies, such as Russia and Iran, plays an equally decisive role.
