Over the past few weeks, the Documentation Center Political Islam (DPI) has been involved in several events. On 6 March, an awareness-raising workshop on the current topic of “Islamist radicalization in social media” was held at the Herminenhof cultural center in the city of Wels, where a DPI speaker provided expert input. Various videos were used to provide insights into the online activities of Islamist influencers, among other things. More than 30 participants from the fields of education, social and youth work as well as emergency services took part in the event, where an intensive exchange took place.
On March 19, DPI Director Lisa Fellhofer gave a lecture on “Religiously motivated extremism: currents in political Islam” as part of the “Forum Time and Faith” of the Catholic Academics Association of the Archdiocese of Vienna at the Otto Maurer Center. Among other things, it was shown how religious extremism attempts to weaken the principles of the democratic constitutional state and fundamental human rights or to abolish them in favor of religiously interpreted norms.
Further DPI lectures took place at the end of February, for example at the Private University College of Teacher Education Linz with the title “Phenomena of Political Islam” online and at the University College of Teacher Education Lower Austria in Altlengbach. At the beginning of March, a DPI speaker gave a lecture on the topic of “Radicalization of young people” as part of the Lower Austrian Youth Council conference at the Landhaus in St. Pölten.
