This week, the Documentation Center Political Islam (DPI) released a new study titled “The Financial Operations of Hezbollah in Europe,” which received widespread media coverage. Author Lina Khatib presented the report at a press conference and outlined its key findings. The focus of the reporting was on Hezbollah’s extensive financing network, which consists largely of illegal activities such as drug trafficking. Another central question was how the Shiite Islamist organization uses Europe as a hub for its business activities and how this could be sanctioned. Currently, most EU countries classify only the military wing as terrorist, while the political wing is allowed to operate legally.
Among other things, nearly all daily newspapers in Austria (both online and in print) reported on the release, which was also covered in radio and TV reports.
