Research by the Documentation Centre Political Islam (DPI) shows how religious extremist ideologies can fuel social polarisation. In an interview with Carmen Baumgartner-Pötz of the Tiroler Tageszeitung (TT), DPI Director Lisa Fellhofer discusses, among other things, radicalisation, social media, the relationship between moderate and Islamist forces, and the importance of a nuanced debate. Particularly online, extremist actors specifically target young people – increasingly young women as well – who are approached by Islamist influencers with a supposed “alternative model” to Western society. Fellhofer therefore emphasises the important role of liberal Muslim voices and preventive work by civil society. At the same time, she argues, an objective debate is needed. At the heart of this is the question of which religious and ideological currents are gaining influence in society – particularly where the fundamental principles of the rule of law are being called into question.
