The ORF news programmes ‘Aktuell nach fünf’, ‘Wien Heute’ and ‘ORF III Aktuell’ reported on the new study by the Documentation Centre Political Islam (DPI), which was published in cooperation with the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). The development of Chechen society and history in Europe was analysed on the basis of literature-based data. In addition to this comprehensive analysis of the diaspora, it was also possible to conduct qualitative interviews with members of the community in Vienna, some of whom were ‘moral guardians’ themselves or wanted to join jihadist groups in Syria. DPI Director Lisa Fellhofer talked about the results of the exploratory study. Islamist and ethnonationalist influences can lead to radicalisation in the community. Male adolescents in particular try to enforce their ideas of power as ‘guardians of morals’ through a strongly patriarchal world view, whereby they particularly restrict the freedom of choice of girls and women.
